Story Time.

Any Time!

Through reading, rhymes, songs and play, story time is a fun and entertaining way to help your child’s development, while fostering a love of reading.

At Shellharbour City Libraries we are passionate about developing programs that are focused around early literacy and families. Now you can engage in our story time program as a family from the comfort of your own home.

Early literacy

Literacy learning starts from the day a child is born. Early forms of literacy are seen in gestures and talking.

The development of early literacy skills, for example understanding the meaning of safety signs and labels or knowing which is an ambulance, police car or fire truck, are crucial building blocks for future reading and writing skills in primary school and beyond.

Tips for parents

Here are some simple tips for building your child’s early literacy skills;

  • Start reading with your child from birth. Aim for one book a day, more if they are engaged with reading, it can be the same book every day!

  • Talk with your child, engage them in conversations, asks questions and explain everything. Even if it is a mundane daily task like washing the dishes, explain to your child what you are doing and why. Use everyday tasks as an opportunity for a conversation with your child.

  • Sing and rhyme with your child.

  • Make up your own stories or play pretend.
